Entry #10 - Opinion about the class.

There are several lessons I have taken from this course; however, the most useful one, in my opinion, is the creation of essays and also the types. It is very important because, as a future teacher, I would like to focus on research to facilitate learning a second language, and the construction of expository and argumentative essays is key in this matter. Another very important detail I learned from this class was the use of commas and proper punctuation. I like to think I have a C2 level, but every day, you realize there is so much more yet to learn. One more important lesson was definitely the distinction between compound and simple sentences, which includes a very important detail that are connectors, connectors are key when writing, so I was very happy when I was able to learn multiple connector words and how to use them with their proper punctuation. This class is very important as it allows the student to be creative and forces the student to write, which is a great idea tha...

Entry #9 - Expository essay.

As of 2025, there are approximately 50 countries that have legalized the medical use of Cannabis. In the United States, it has become legal in 39 out of 50 states, and the amount of tax revenue collected from this product has been in the billions. Cannabis has become one of the most prominent alternative medicines in the modern world due to its pain relief benefits, the possibility of growing your own medicine at home, and the minimal side effects in general. Cannabis has been used for thousands of years; in fact, its first documented use dates to 2800 BC when it was listed in the pharmacopoeia of Emperor Shen Nung, who is regarded as the father of Chinese medicine. The pain relief properties of this plant have been proven in multiple studies and research projects, and it is considered a better alternative than opioids in specific diseases and conditions. For example, a patient undergoing chemotherapy will face a lot of challenges, including hair loss, lack of appetite, and naus...

Entry #7 - News article comment. Composition 1 - 2025

This is an unfortunate piece of news, in the article it is mentioned that Costa Rica has increased alarmingly the number of murders, specifically femicides, with 9 women being victims of this crime just in the beginning of this year. The article explains the multiple reasons why the number has increased in the last couple of years due to factors as gender inequality, economic problems, and the rise of organized crime in our country. Unfortunately, not all victims report violence when it is starting, mostly out of fear of retaliation, specifically in this country where the laws are very catch and release oriented. Most criminals can walk free after committing even the most heinous crimes. Entry #5- News article comment. Composition 1 - 2025

The article from “El Observador” talks about the Costa Rican migration police finding more than 40 immigrants working without the proper permits. In my opinion, these kinds of police procedures are important in this kind of commercial areas, as the owners usually hire immigrants to avoid paying taxes and insurance, furthermore, these businesses typically charge super expensive prices, and usually they will only accept dollars, instead of the actual currency in Costa Rica, colón. The article also mentions how the owners did not pay the employees the minimum wages required by Costa Rican labor laws, and they were able to find multiple occupational hazards in their establishments, for example, lack of extinguishers even in the restaurant’s kitchens. As I previously stated, I believe that these operations are good for the country's economy; however it cannot be focused on touristic areas, it has to be conducted in the capital as well, as there are a lot of people in poor working condit...

Entry #4 - My Favorite Summer Vacation. Composition 1 - 2025

My favorite summer vacation has been going to Cuba, I was 17 years old so it was a couple of years ago, however, I can still remember the beautiful landscapes Cuba had to offer. On the first day, we arrived at La Habana. I was a bit disappointed because the city was dirty, filled with trash, and poverty, and many people in the street trying to help us for some money in exchange, but when we got to the rural areas everything was completely different, there were mountains, we rode horses through valleys with wonderful scenery, and we swam in the most pristine beaches you can imagine, no waves and the water so clear you could see your feet when you look below.  For dinner, we had the most delicious fried fish I have ever had, with beans and rice, then we went to the party the host in the streets of Viñales, all the locals normally meet in the center of town to listen to music, drink beer, and dance salsa.

Entry #3 - A Memorable Journey. Composition 1 - 2025

Thanks to my job, I have had the opportunity to get my passports full of stamps, however one of my favorite trips has been to Las Vegas by far. As soon as you land you will know you are in a different place, when I stepped out of the plane, I saw slot machines next to the gates with people sitting in them at 2 pm on a Tuesday. Most hotels have casinos, I stayed at the Mandalay Bay and it also had one, a huge one for that matter, it is not my cup of tea mainly because I do not like losing money and people are allowed to smoke inside so the whole place smells like an ashtray, a very used one, which there are several of in Las Vegas, one ashtray for each machine and there are thousands of them. As you can tell the casinos were not my favorite part of the trip, but the food and the views were magnific, there are so many beautiful places, including the casinos, some of them are decorated with Greek art and some of them recreate landscapes and buildings from other parts of the world, my favo...

Entry #2 Descriptive paragraph. Composition 1 - 2025

I have written a lot of texts in my life, mostly for school, however, I also like to write in journals to express different emotions, as I find that writing can have a very soothing effect. Normally I don’t find it difficult to write when I am doing it about a topic I love, I find it difficult when I must write regarding a subject that may be complicated or not so interesting for me. To organize the ideas, I like to start by creating a flow chart, just like when you are coding is good to have an idea about what you are going to transmit in the paragraph with alternatives or main ideas. I have not experienced what is referred to as writers block when I am writing, but sometimes it does happen at work, when I don’t know what to do next I like to take a break, things may come easier with a calmer perspective.
